AAI was founded on November 14, 1949 by a handful of dedicated amateur astronomers. They continue to promote an interest in the science of astronomy through their many activities and programs. These include courses, lectures, and college scholarships. With over 300 members, AAI is one of the largest astronomy clubs in the United States. The general public is invited to visit the Sperry Observatory and attend the illustrated talk and enjoy views of the night sky.
The Sperry Observatory is the home of Amateur Astronomers, Incorporated, a non-profit organization. The observatory houses two of the largest telescopes on the East Coast for amateur use. AAI maintains a computer room, a machine shop, and an optical shop for amateur telescope making and repair. These observation sessions bring AAI members and the public together to view a wide variety of celestial objects with club and member telescopes, when lunar glare is minimal.
