Amateur Astronomers, Inc.
Amateur Astronomers, Inc. (AAI) is an amateur astronomy organization in Central New Jersey. Founded in 1949, it currently has over 300 members, making it one of the largest astronomy clubs in the United States. The home of AAI is the William Miller Sperry Observatory on the campus of the Union County College in Cranford, New Jersey. The observatory houses two of the largest telescopes on the East Coast for amateur use. The club is organized into a number of interest and service committees, supporting all areas of astronomy and public relations.AAI is a non-profit organization; therefore, any donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated and is tax deductible.
The general public is invited to visit the Sperry Observatory and attend the illustrated talk and enjoy views of the night sky. Admission and parking are free, however, donations are gratefully accepted.Today, the influence of William M. Sperry and the Sperry family is still apparent in Cranford, not only through the many Sperry decendants still living in the area including many who are attending these dedication ceremonies today - but in the memories of many long-time residents who knew the Sperry brothers and their families. William M. Sperry was one of the founders and later president of the Cranford National Bank, which later became the Cranford Trust Company and is now the Cranford Branch of the Suburban Trust Company.
