Astronomical Institute is one of three institutes of the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy, University of Wroclaw. The remaining two institutes are: Institute of Experimental Physics and Institute of Theoretical Physics. The Faculty administration and the buidings of both Institutes of Physics are located at 9 Maks Born square.Astronomical Obserwatory in Wroclaw was founded in 1791 by Anton Jungnitz. At the beginning it was situated in the Mathematical Tower of the Main University Building. After Jungnitz, the Observatory was directed by: Ernst Julius Scholtz, Ludwig Boguslawski, the discoverer of the 1835 comet, and next by Johann Galle, the discoverer of Neptune (1846).
Since its foundation, the Astronomical Institute was a part of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. As the institutes developed and the number of the students increased considerably, a necessity of reorganization appeared. In 1995 the Faculty of Chemistry was created. A year later, the remaining part of the old faculty splitted into two separate faculties: Mathematics and Informatics, and Physics and Astronomy.Astrophysics is one of two branches of astronomy, the scientists in our Institute work on.The astrophysicists from Wroclaw take part in the four-years long (2006-2010) European project named HELAS (European Helio- and Asteroseismology Network).
