Astronomical Society of Victoria

The Astronomical Society of Victoria Inc. is a Melbourne based Society (but with many country members) for people interested in Astronomy, attracting and catering for people with from a wide range of ages and a wide range of abilities and interests. The Society was founded in 1922 and celebrated its 80th year in 2002. It has a Membership of approximately 850 – the largest in Australia – and perhaps the world. ASV Incorporated has a Constitution which should be read before applying for membership (see below). Its activities are coordinated by a Council of Officers, Councillors and Section Directors who meet monthly. New members are encouraged to talk to Directors of the Section(s) they wish to participate in.

The ASV has a 20″ telescope, other facilities and weekly activities at its Society Rooms in Burwood. It own a property called the Leon Mow Dark Sky Site north of Melbourne, which has a pristine sky for deep sky observing. A 25″ telescope is also sited there. The ASV maintains a Library and also produces an annual Yearbook and bi-monthly Newsletters. The overall objective will be to encourage junior members in their study of Astronomy, and to support and foster individual interests within the discipline. An important aspect will be the acquiring of practical skills of observation based on the fundamental understanding of the motion of the stars, moon and planets across the sky.
