European Astronomical Society

The European Astronomical Society is an association founded under the Swiss Civil Code in 1990. The purpose of the society is to contribute to and promote the advancement of astronomy, in its broadest sense, in Europe, by all suitable means and in particular: by providing an independent forum for the discussion of subjects of common interest. by providing means whereby action can be taken on those matters which appear desirable to be handled at the European level. The Society has a Constitution defining the general rules (out of which the various items in these Web pages have been extracted), complemented by Bye-laws specifying various detailed procedures.

IRAM is an international research institute for radio astronomy. Its overall objective is to explore the universe and to study its origins and evolution. Founded in 1979, IRAMs headquarters are located in Grenoble. With a staff of more than 120 scientists, engineers, technicians and administrative personnel, IRAM maintains and develops two observatories: the 30-meter telescope located on Pico Veleta near Granada in Spain, and the Plateau de Bure interferometer (an array of six 15-meter telescopes) in the French Alps. Both instruments are prime facilities for radio astronomy and the most powerful observatories today operating at millimetre wavelengths.
