January 3rd, 2009 Posted in 123 triad

The Department of Physics and Astronomy has been part of the University of Victoria since its inception in 1963. At present, the Department is best known for its exceptionally strong, internationally recognized research programs in Nuclear and Particle Physics, and Astronomy and Astrophysics. In addition to these, the departmental faculty members also maintain very active research programs in the areas of Theoretical Physics (including Gravitation) , Ocean Physics , Condensed Matter Physics and Medical Physics.

These research disciplines historically developed as a result of close interactions with the federal research laboratories in and near Victoria, such as the Herzberg Institute for Astrophysics, the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, TRIUMF (Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics), the Pacific Geoscience Centre, the Institute for Ocean Sciences and UVic’s Centre for Earth and Ocean Research.
