CIRA-Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali

The Aerospace Sector, due to its very nature, is a field of high technology. The availability of advanced technologies and, still more, the ability to develop them with continuity, is considered in every country the basic requirement for the growth and durable success of its industries. CIRA-Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (Italian Aerospace Research Centre ) was established in July 1984 to respond to these needs.

CIRA is a shareholders’ consortium with a public-owned majority: the State, through the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche -National Research Council (CNR), have held, since 1998, the majority of the share capital, to which the Campania Region and the main Italian aerospace industries also participate.CIRA is located in Campania, a region with a high concentration of industries that operate in the aerospace sector: Alenia, Fiat Avio, Alfa Romeo Avio, Vulcan Air, Piaggio, Magnaghi, Tecnam, etc. The joint public-private participation has made CIRA’s objectives consistent with national strategic guidelines and the needs of industry, thereby contributing to Italy’s social and economic development.

MIt Haystack Observatory

Operations began in 1964, and for the first ten years the primary role of Haystack was as a planetary astronomy radar, observing the reflection characteristics and orbital parameters of the Moon, Venus, Mars, and Mercury. Topographical characteristics of the lunar surface were examined with emphasis on the proposed landing sites for the Apollo lander, and similar observations were made in support of the Viking lander on Mars. In 1970, the Haystack facility was transferred from the Air Force to MIT to be operated under agreement with NEROC to foster and encourage radio astronomy.

Haystack is renowned for many astronomical discoveries such as the initial detections of various molecular species in interstellar space. The Haystack radio telescope is a fully steerable parabolic antenna 37 meters in diameter, enclosed in the world’s largest space-frame radome. This material has been designed to minimize signal loss across the frequency bands of astronomical interest. The Haystack 37-m diameter antenna surface is made of 96 honeycomb aluminum panels which are set to a root-mean-square tolerance of 0.25 mm. The first digital correlation spectrometer for radio astronomy was built at Haystack in the early sixties. It was used for the discovery at Millstone Hill in 1963 of the OH (hydroxyl) radical, which was the first molecule to be detected in interstellar space.

Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy

The Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) is a university-based millimeter array consisting of six 10.4-meter, nine 6.1-meter, and eight 3.5-meter antennas that are used in combination to image astronomical Universe at millimeter wavelengths. Located on a new high-altitude site in eastern California, CARMA provides unparalleled sensitivity, broad frequency coverage, sub-arcsecond resolution and wide-field heterogeneous imaging capabilities, along with innovative technologies and educational opportunities.

Science with CARMA centers around the study of the cold universe through imaging of radio emission from molecules, dust, and relic emission from the very early Universe. Primary science areas include: the formation, evolution, and dynamics of galaxies, the formation of stars and planetary systems around other stars, the composition of planetary atmospheres, comets and other small bodies in their Solar System, and the evolution of galaxy clusters and the Universe. The CARMA institutions, through their involvement in CARMA, support active research groups encompassing professors, research scientists, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
